Wolves, Boys, & Other Things that Might Kill Me Book Review

So this book doesn’t really fit into our genres of science fiction or fantasy. I assumed that the wolves were werewolves, which they aren’t. This story is more of a coming of age story of a girl who lives in Yellowstone Park. Regardless of the genre of book, it was a great read.

I truly dislike recapping the book in my review, but I feel like I need to give you a little bit of the premise to be able to honestly review the story.

KJ is a young girl who lives with her outdoorsy guide father. Her month died when she was young, and her father seems to wish he had a girl. Within then last few years the government decided to reintroduce wolves into Yellowstone Park. At first this doesn’t affect her, but she is asked to write about wolves in her school paper.

I WANT TO BUY WOLVES, BOYS, & OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT KILL ME

Since this story is not sci fi or fantasy, the problems are much more real. Wolves are obviously a natural predator, and kill game that the hunters want to hunt. They also will kill the livestock of the ranchers in the area. After the last couple years working in a business to business setting, I know that people are very protective of their lively hood. It is no different with these ranchers. Not only are the wolves preying on animals, but someone in the town is not happy with KJ’s pro- wolf attitude. This causes for some violence. This honestly affected me more than the violence that I would read in a book that seemed more fictional.

The one thing we can count on a good young adult book to have is a little bit of a love story, which of course there is! I enjoy the dynamics of her father not knowing how to cope with a young teenage daughter and a boy.
