Ever sin
ce I started reading almost exclusively on my e-reader, Amazon has been suggesting books for me. Of course they are all among the same class: young adult fantasy and scifi. Well, this is one of those books, and I found it extremely funny. I actually picked the first book in this series up at the bookstore almost 2 years ago. At the time, I didn’t find it super compelling, and left without buying it. So when I saw Amazon recommended it to me, I decided it might be a sign.
The whole series is out now, and I’ve read all three, so this review is actually on the entire series, not just the first book. The three books are called The Summoning, The Awakening, and The Reckoning.
This story sounds like similar to Hush Money, which I reviewed recently. So if you liked that book, you will probably find this one to be a great read as well. I feel like books about people with special abilities is something that will continue to be written, and as long as they are unique, I will read as many as I can. In this book the main character is only 15 years old. She is small for her age, and just hitting puberty. On the same day her period starts she starts seeing ghosts. Talk about a weird coming of age.
This is where the book got interesting, and somewhat sad. She is hospitalized, diagnosed as schizophrenic, and sent to live in a group home. This makes me wonder if kids started gaining powers, would society try to tell them they are crazy and medicating them? I decided that of course they would, because this stuff is only okay in books.
Soon into this first book you realize that ghosts are the beginning of the super natural. Werewolves witches, and firestarters soon join, and they have a common enemy. While these kids are running for the enemy, you realize that not everybody is as they seem. The adults have ulterior motives, and the group of kids has to find who they can trust. I like this, since they make both good and bad decisions, and learn from all of them.
Finally i am going to talk about the love story. At first I was disappointed in the love story. I felt like the guy didn’t really deserve this girl who is willing to do something she feels strongly against to help her friends. Although, by the end, I thought they were the best match.
