The last couple weeks I have read more books then I have in the last couple months due to the NBA finals. This gives me the time to go to the bookstore and browse, as always, to the young adult fantasy section. During my last trip I picked up Abandon by Meg Cabot. I read the back, and was intrigued by the fact that this story is a retelling of the greek myth about Persephone. I didn’t buy it on that trip, but the next time I was on my computer, I pulled the book up and read the first couple pages. I was hooked. So, I bought it a few days later, and read it in one night.
This is a story of Pierce, fitting name, who is currently 17 years old. When she was 15 she died. This you all know from the back of the book. What you don’t know are the details about her death, or anything else that happened since then. You only know what she is thinking about at that moment, and her thoughts jump around, a lot! She would remember the first half of the story, then get side tracked to something else. To be honest, it was slightly stressful not to know the whole story.
I really enjoyed the way Meg Cabot brought the location into the story. I feel like, similar to the Twilight series, the location is almost a character in itself. Its mood affects the weather, which are always evident.
I did feel like there were a few parts of the story that were not explored, and therefore not resolved. I was really frustrated until I realized this is the first book in a series of three. I hope the parts that are not explored in this story are explored in the following books, but now that I know how the next one starts, I am not sure how she will be able to include them in the following books.
